Notes and list of abbreviations
Comments regarding ‘the seminar’ will typically refer to the institution or culture of seminars, rather than a one-off meeting, whilst references to ‘the Seminar’ will stand as a shorthand for an aforementioned named seminar series. The life dates of scholars have been given when useful, although, judiciously, not in all cases. Other contextual details, including those relating to the personal archives of historians, are equally suggestive rather than exhaustive. For the sake of focus and readability what follows reflects a relatively simple, and at times oversimplified, appreciation of the evolution of the affiliate and constituent colleges, and now member institutions, of the University of London. A deeper awareness of the complex contingencies and fine-grain changes pertinent to understanding a range of issues touched upon by this book – the nomenclature and function of ‘supervisors’ and ‘convenors’ to mention just two – require more specialist investigations. The chapter titles, whilst perhaps a little inelegant when presented together here, reflect the current titles of the actual seminar series operating at the IHR.
