A Inteligência Artificial e a cosmofloresta1

Conceito do Bem Viver indígena.

A valorização e preservação do conhecimento tradicional.

A educação e conscientização.

Novamente, a chave aqui é a cocriação.

AI and the cosmoforest6

The cosmoforest: an enveloping vision of nature

The term ‘cosmoforest’ (referring to the combination of our natural environment and our cosmology) represents a worldview that transcends the mere biological definition of a forest. It encompasses the deep and intrinsic relationship between humans, nature and the universe, as perceived by various Indigenous cultures. It’s not just about trees and animals, but a living system where everything is connected:

Cosmovision and spirituality. The forest is seen as a sacred space, inhabited by spirits and ancestors, and each element has both meaning and purpose.

Ancestrality and traditional knowledge. It encompasses a vast body of knowledge about medicinal plants, natural cycles, sustainable land management and the interdependence of all life-forms.

The context of the Jê ethnic groups7 and their social organisation. Indigenous communities often structure their lives and practices in harmony with the rhythms and characteristics of the forest.

The concept of Indigenous Buen Vivir/Bem Viver [living well]. The physical and mental health of individuals is directly linked to the health and vitality of the environment around them.

The cosmoforest, therefore, is a concept that unites ecology, spirituality, culture and knowledge, offering a sensitive perspective that favours a holistic and respectful approach to life on earth.

Artificial Intelligence in the service of the cosmoforest

Indigenous co-creation with non-Indigenous people and technologies can be a resistance strategy that allows Indigenous Peoples to appropriate non-Indigenous tools, which are then used as a lever for their advocacy work in education, science and technology. The use of AI in this regard is promising.

The application of Artificial Intelligence in projects related to the cosmoforest, when conducted in genuine co-creation with Indigenous Peoples, can be a powerful tool for the following:

Enhancement and preservation of traditional knowledge. AI as a tool can assist in the organisation, digitisation and even dissemination of ancestral knowledge, always under the guidance and with the permission of the communities involved. This can include cataloguing medicinal plants, oral histories, songs and rituals.

Studies and applications for environmental monitoring. Algorithms can analyse data from satellites, drones and sensors to monitor deforestation, fires, invasions of Indigenous lands and the health of biodiversity, providing crucial information for territorial protection.

Education and consciousness-raising. AI can be used in emancipatory education programmes to support Indigenous curricular autonomy, and it can help create interactive and immersive tools to educate the general public about the importance of forests, Indigenous culture and the challenges faced by these communities.

Strengthening Indigenous self-determination. Rather than imposing solutions, AI should be a tool that serves the needs and priorities established by the communities themselves, strengthening their capacity to manage and defend their territories and cultures.

It’s crucial to emphasise that co-creation means that the initiative, control and ownership of data and results must remain with Indigenous communities. AI should be a supportive tool, not a substitute for Indigenous wisdom and leadership. This involves respecting consultation protocols; free, prior and informed consent;8 and ensuring that the technology meets the needs of, and aligns with, the worldviews of the communities.

Algorithmic image generation: a visual bridge

The ability of AI to generate images – for example, through generative adversarial networks (GANs) or diffusion models – can be explored in innovative ways in conjunction with the concept of the cosmoforest and the practice of co-creation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people:

In the visualisation of narratives and cosmologies. Algorithms can be trained with descriptions and concepts provided by Indigenous elders and storytellers to generate visual representations of their myths, legends, spiritual beings or ancestral landscapes, making them more accessible and understandable for diverse audiences, including new generations of Indigenous people.

In the aesthetic representation of the cosmoforest. AI can create images that convey the depth and complexity of the cosmoforest, going beyond a merely botanical representation. This could include symbolic elements, colours and shapes that reflect the Indigenous vision of the interconnection between life, the spirit world and the environment (see Fig. 10.1).

As a tool for Indigenous artistic expression. Indigenous artists could use these AI tools as a new medium to express their visions and knowledge, combining traditional techniques with the possibilities of digital art. This could open new avenues for creativity and the dissemination of their cultures.

In the production of educational and publicity materials. AI can generate images for textbooks, exhibitions, awareness campaigns or documentaries that portray the cosmoforest in a way that the Indigenous communities find respectful and authentic.

Again, the key here is co-creation. AI-generated images should not be imposed or created without the oversight and consent of Indigenous communities. They should be the result of an ongoing dialogue where AI serves as a tool to visualise and materialise the ideas, aesthetics and knowledge that come from these cultures. Avoiding cultural appropriation or the creation of stereotypical representations is essential.

I believe that bringing together the cosmoforest with Artificial Intelligence, mediated through co-creative practices, offers a promising path for the valorisation of ancestral knowledge, environmental protection and the construction of a more just and sustainable future.

Representing Indigenous kin and our spiritual beings with AI9

My name is Tadeu dos Santos. As an artist, I’m known as Tadeu Kaingang, and I have also been given the Indigenous name, Tã No, which means ‘lightning’ in the Kaingang language. I am a visual artist working across a range of different media and contexts to express the spirituality, knowledge and aesthetic expression that spring from nature, where our spiritual beings are always present. Together with artist Sheilla Souza, I work as part of Coletivo Kókir,10 a collective dedicated to collaborative work with Indigenous Peoples from Brazil and beyond. In 2023, we were involved in the Histórias Indígenas [Indigenous Histories] season of events at the MASP (the Assis Chateaubriand São Paulo Art Museum), a key milestone in the appreciation of Indigenous art in the country, and in 2025, we had a major solo exhibition at the Carmo Johnson Projects Gallery in São Paulo.

In my work as part of the AIAI project, I wanted to create an image showing groups of Indigenous people conversing with a spiritual being.11 I specifically asked for it to be a ‘major’ spiritual being or even spirituality itself. I imagined it being like a plant or a light. I know there are many illustrations of Gaia, Mother Earth, and there are lots of different ways of representing this, even biblical ones. So, what would this representation look like from our cosmovision? There would be Indigenous groups conversing with these spiritual beings, and they would be materialising as physical bodies in the same way that linguistic structures emerge in a conversation.

In the images that I generated, I was quite specific in saying that I wanted them to represent a particular ethnic group. For example, in Fig. 10.2, I asked for these four images to show Kaingang people. But you can see that these people are not from this region, they’re not from Brazil. They must be Indigenous people from elsewhere in Latin America – Bolivia, Guatemala, somewhere else – but not from Brazil. And another thing is that we were talking about 2050, the future, and these images continue to represent Indigenous Peoples as figures from the past, from the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries. The AI doesn’t seem to be able to just put a mobile phone in an Indigenous person’s hand, for example. Perhaps in 2050 we won’t still be using mobile phones, but with all these new technologies, I was surprised not to see anything like that in these images. Personally, I was a bit frustrated and thought, ‘Wow, Artificial Intelligence can’t see the future’. We’ve got all this technology and human beings travelling into space and things like that, and yet this AI tool continues to represent us Indigenous people as if we were frozen in the past. Maybe in Fig. 10.3, the images are auguring a new wave of colonisation – I don’t know, maybe people are expecting the arrival of an intergalactic ship or a different kind of galleon.…

The fantastical figures, the hybrid beings that you can see in the set of images in Fig. 10.4, remind me of the work of Hieronymus Bosch. The AI has tried to represent the spiritual beings as figures, as a mixture of a bird with something or other, but overall, it’s more of a traditional image of Eden, of Paradise. So, my reading is that this is not a critical representation; it’s not doing anything new. It’s almost as if people have been asked to pose for a photograph: ‘Everyone stay still so I can take a picture’. It seems like that’s what has happened, and this gives the impression that there’s no dialogue happening. The spiritual being isn’t communicating with the people … or maybe it’s telepathic communication … the people are interacting mentally with this invisible, supernatural spiritual being.… But I’m forcing this interpretation to try to make the logic of the image fit with what I had in mind.

I really wanted to provoke the AI tool to visualise a conversation between humans – Indigenous people – and spiritual beings, spirituality, nature, rendered as a physical form or body. I think it’s attempted to do this to some extent with the animals. But just seeing a hummingbird with an elephant’s trunk wouldn’t really convince me in this regard. It might make me feel scared rather than leave me saying, ‘Wow, this is an entidade; it’s my spiritual guide’.

You can also see the beings that the AI is trying to create. In the images in Fig. 10.4, there’s the hare there with a mouth of something else (see bottom left image). Below that, there’s a being that looks like a bird with the head of a cat or something like that. In the bottom right image, I think the AI has created a fantastical being, an encantado. It looks like a butterfly wing mixed with something else. And the AI also seems to have done something to the humans – their expressions, their eyes. It seems like a spiritual being that’s taking the form of those human bodies. Perhaps the AI really is trying to show us a spiritual being, and we’re supposed to interpret it this way.

I think AI tries to approximate what we request, but it really can’t understand abstract concepts. So it translates them into the most concrete form that it can come up with – animals, humans and hybrid beings – to try to respond to this provocation of the supernatural, the fantastic, the mysterious. But the concrete form that it really can’t seem to represent visually is what a contemporary Indigenous person looks like.

  6. 6 Editors’ note: This text has been written with the help of AI to ‘tidy up’ an original text written by the author, who is severely dyslexic. The author recognises the value of generative AI tools to help improve his written self-expression, even though he finds that they also produce results that feel ‘a bit cold’ and lacking in soul or misrepresent key points he intended to convey.

  7. 7 Editors’ note: The Jê ethnic groups are Indigenous Peoples of Brazil who speak Macro-Jê languages. This includes the Kaingang language.

  8. 8 Editors’ note: This is a fundamental right of Indigenous Peoples and traditional communities, guaranteed by the Brazilian Constitution and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 169.

  9. 9 Editors’ note: This text stems in large part from the focus groups that took place in May 2023 during the first phase of the AIAI project.

  10. 10 Editors’ note: Kókir means ‘hunger’ in Kaingang.

  11. 11 Editors’ note: The words used in Portuguese are entidade and encantado. In this context, these terms refer to protective spirits within Indigenous belief systems.
